Where is your god launches.

So, youtube is directly responsible for me creating this site. I have spent hours upon hours sifting through debates, scientific theory, religious propaganda and philosophies on ‘proofs of god’. If I wasn’t pounding my fists against the table, I’d be on the verge of tears at the occasional (often?) stupidity of the country I live in. The mindless drone of the religious, trying to justify their mystical beliefs or the odd fact that we praise our political leaders at having faith. As if that were a virtue to be commended.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I love the United States. I feel I should very distinctly clarify that so as not to seem like an anarchist or an ungrateful citizen. Our nation has it’s merits as well as it’s faults. However, this site isn’t here to debate left vs right, liberal vs conservative. I made this site to address a problem that is on a level that effects both parties: Religion.
Most of our nation believes in a god of some sort. Atheist and agnostics make up only 12% of our populace. When I heard this number I was astonished. Well maybe I shouldn’t have been. Every president we’ve had has been religious. It never occurred to me until recently that atheists were the minority. I spend so much time reading scientific journals, articles and in general associating myself with ‘atheist-type’ people that I didn’t even realize what sort of bias our country had.
As crazy as that number was to me, another figure had me literally reeling. 63% of Americans believe that the bible is literally true. Yes, thats right: virgin birth, jesus resurrection, the earth is 6000 years old, literal freaking truth. I had assumed most people used religion in a sort of “Well, I believe in God but I haven’t been to church in years.” To actually believe all of this literally was absurd to me. If I told someone I saw a bush on fire but not consumed they would laugh at me. I’d laugh at me!
There really are so many things I’d like to get into in this first post but that’s not what it was intended for. I am going off on a huge angry rant when really all I wanted to do was say “Hello there, this is my site.” Please comment or tell your friends about this site. I know it’s not much, I mean, I am a web developer and I’m using a default wordpress theme so I know it needs some work. That’s it for now, if you have any interesting articles on religion please send them my way. Thanks and enjoy.

Well, according to this article, Bible reading has been on the decline.

I will bet you $20 that a significant fraction of those Americans who said the Bible is true haven’t read the Bible in the first place. This study points out that 63% of Americans cannot even name the four Gospels of the New Testament. I think the main problem is that Americans in general are intellectually very lazy. They don’t question or test the beliefs that they were brought up with, because that would take too much effort. This is exacerbated by an inadequate educational system that encourages conformity to a majority that happens to be religious.
I haven’t read any of the other articles yet. So far this looks like it has some promise.
If this is a stupid country why don’t you go live somewhere else?
A silly argument. I have family here as you well know. And also because I love America and hope that one day it will be the country that I and many others hope it to be.
