Atheism The Undiscovered Bias

Posted by Brandon On May - 31 - 2008

I’m going to show everyone a quote and I want you to guess who said it. Then after, I want you to decide for yourselves how our country thinks of atheists. (And I’m sure every atheist has read this quote; this is for everyone else).

“No, I don’t know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God.”

Any guesses? I’ll let you ponder for a bit.

Well that was our wonderful and intellectual president George Bush Sr during an interview with Robert Sherman, a reporter for the American Atheist news journal.

Now, you can’t compare atheists to other minorities or sexes that get truly discriminated against; homosexuals being a prime example but that’s for another article. But it’s true that atheists are very much looked down upon in this country. That is why when you hear something like “He is a man of faith.” it is said with reverence and approval.

Well I feel for you, brothers of atheism, and I hope that one day we can see an atheist in the highest offices of our government. Every single president thus far has been an older white male of Christian belief. There will very likely be a female or African American president before an atheist.

This all seems sort of funny to me in a way but at the same time I think it’s a shame. Everyday science and reason take another step towards absolute knowledge. Everyday we get closer at solving the riddles of our universe, closing the gap of dogma and superstition.  And hopefully, one day, we will finally be able to move forward as a society and put away the ghosts of our primitive pasts and move into an era where reason and fact hold more true than ancient myth.

Dinosaurs Man’s Best Friend?

Posted by Brandon On May - 29 - 2008

I have decided where I am going on my next vacation: Petersburg, Kentucky. What’s in Petersburg you ask? Why the brand new (2007 really) creationist museum!

This has to be the most fantastic of all museums. Ken Ham has created a museum that teaches young earth creationism, which is the uhh *cough* theory *cough* that the all life on earth started between six and ten thousand years ago. Anyone who’s taken an elementary science class will laugh at this, but I digress.

Now, when I first heard about this museum, I wasn’t too angry. I thought that it would teach about baby Jesus and the like. Throw in some Adam and Eve and mix in a little bit of resurrection talk for good measure. But oh no, they take it a step (leap) too far.

They teach that humans and dinosaurs were alive during the same period of time and that the T-Rex didn’t eat meat until Adam had committed the original sin. Man oh man, this makes me want to tear my eyeballs out. There’s so much scientific data that the earth is 4.54 billion years old, but all of that is lost in the futile attempts at the religious to try and justify their false beliefs.

To prove these awesome theories they try and use science. But unfortunately a spoonful of pseudo-science doesn’t help this reasoning go down. And yes, I used a horrible Mary Poppins reference. Here’s a good BBC clip on a museum that only America could produce. Enjoy:

Catholic Church: You so crazy

Posted by Brandon On May - 28 - 2008

Why is it that the catholic church does so many weird things? They “got rid” of limbo. Limbo being the place at the edge of hell where unbaptized babies would go if they died at an early age. I’m not sure what that means. I guess there was this sort of bad place with a bunch of confused babies and aborted fetuses crying and crawling around. Then one day it was cool and they floated up into heaven because some guy here on earth said it was ok.

Well, that’s some pretty weird stuff. But what about these “new deadly sins”. It appears that there are some more deadly sins that the pope has come up with. Here’s the original list and their punishment:

Pride - Broken on the wheel
Envy - Put in freezing water
Gluttony - Forced to eat rats, toads, and snakes
Lust - Smothered in fire and brimstone
Anger - Dismembered alive
Greed - Put in cauldrons of boiling oil
Sloth - Thrown in snake pits

I can dig these, they are all pretty good. But these new ones are even better:

The new ones include: environmental pollution, genetic manipulation, obscene wealth, infliction of poverty, drug trafficking, morally debatable experiments, and violation of the fundamental rights of human nature.

It’s not too clear if these will grant you immediate access to the underworld or if you get a second chance. We’ll have to see. I’m definitely guilty of a few of these.

The 9 Most Badass Bible Verses

Posted by Brandon On May - 26 - 2008

This link is pretty old but I think it’s probably the funniest thing I have read in a long while. It basically lists a few of the more ridiculous bible verses. Here’s the link. Some of them are not so funny as they are just weird and/or horrifying.

I think the bible is wonderful personally. Funny, sad, cruel and humorous. You can go through a wide assortment of emotions in just a few chapters. Want to read about a cruel angry God? The old testament is just the thing! Want a nicer, more friendly God? Then why not try the new testament.

Seriously, have any of you christians ever read the bible?

Atheist or Agnostic?

Posted by Brandon On May - 26 - 2008

How many of you have heard the argument: “Well it’s just as biased to be atheist as it is to be deist. The only one that truly makes sense is to be agnostic.”

This is an argument that I think is a pretty valid one and can appreciate what agnostics are trying to say. I technically can’t disprove God so why am I an atheist? I suppose this comes down to semantics and philosophy. People often get absolute fact and beliefs mixed up and it can lead to this sort of argument.

Being agnostic is a philosophy; it is not a middle-ground between theism and atheism, as many people would like to believe. To be atheist is to believe there is no God based on the available evidence. Here’s a good example and one that I have used before. Many of you probably have seen The Matrix. Where perception is relative and that reality was not as it seemed. Everyone was connected in a giant network to believe they were living in modern times but were actually living in a post-apocalyptic nightmare.

Now, I want you to prove to me absolutely 100% that this is not the case right now. Using science and reason, give me unquestionable evidence that we are not in some sort of computer virtual reality at this very moment. The answer is you cannot. In every perception there is an inherent uncertainty of which you can’t prove 100%. Now tell me if you believe this? I hope that most of you would answer no. None (most) of us do not truly believe we live in a computer generated world because of probability. When you really think about it, if you are going to be agnostic about God then you have to be agnostic about everything. Nothing could be ever certain and thats why I do not subscribe to that type of existential philosophy.

I do not technically know 100% that God does not exist and I cannot disprove it but based on evidence I find a supernatural being highly unlikely. I base my life in perception, probability and patterns. If you have eaten 2000 oranges in your life, you can safely assume that orange number 2001 will taste like an orange. Were you to take a more agnostic approach toward it you would have to say that you could never know if that next orange will taste like an orange.

So to sum things up: I am atheist not because I am absolutely certain, but because I believe there is no God based on what we currently understand of our universe. To be technically precise I am an “agnostic atheist”. There are people who are true atheists and know for certain there is no God, but this is not me. No good scientist can that they are certain about anything. But you have to take a stand somewhere and have beliefs based on your own observations. There’s an infinite number of things you cannot know for sure, but choose to believe them anyways. So why take God a step further?

Banana Proves God’s Existence

Posted by Brandon On May - 26 - 2008

I have to say this is my favorite video on the proof of God. These two guys, Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort, tour the road and use this demonstration to prove God’s existence. I have to rate this video #1 on the internet. It’s fantastic.

On a more serious note: Wild bananas don’t really look like this. They are much more difficult to open and have giant seeds inside of them. The bananas we see in the store today were genetically engineered by people to be more convienent. But all of this is irrelvant because what about other fruits like a coconut? Has anyone ever tried to open a coconut? I beat the crap out of one once and stabbed at it for 30 minutes.

I’ll also post this other video which is allegedly another “Atheist’s Nightmare”, which shows how very little Christians understand evolution.

This second video is so retarded that it’s hard for me to put into words how I feel. This ‘experiment’ with the peanut butter is silly. There was not (to the best of my knowledge) peanut butter when life began. It is true that scientists are not sure exactly how life came about but this does not mean we will never know. It’s easy to say “Well, God made everything!” but that doesn’t necessarily mean you are correct. The chance of life forming was probably very slim. And the specific conditions are currently unknown but nobody thinks life can spring from peanut butter. That’s horrible science and these guys need to really think before they make videos.

The moral of the story: Yes, bananas are so well adjusted for humans that there absolutely must be an all-knowing and kindly God looking down on us and answering our prayers. And that hey, if life can’t come from peanut butter then evolution must be false. Kudos religious people, you win again.

Where is your god launches.

So, youtube is directly responsible for me creating this site. I have spent hours upon hours sifting through debates, scientific theory, religious propaganda and philosophies on ‘proofs of god’. If I wasn’t pounding my fists against the table, I’d be on the verge of tears at the occasional (often?) stupidity of the country I live in. The mindless drone of the religious, trying to justify their mystical beliefs or the odd fact that we praise our political leaders at having faith. As if that were a virtue to be commended.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I love the United States. I feel I should very distinctly clarify that so as not to seem like an anarchist or an ungrateful citizen. Our nation has it’s merits as well as it’s faults. However, this site isn’t here to debate left vs right, liberal vs conservative. I made this site to address a problem that is on a level that effects both parties: Religion.

Most of our nation believes in a god of some sort. Atheist and agnostics make up only 12% of our populace. When I heard this number I was astonished. Well maybe I shouldn’t have been. Every president we’ve had has been religious. It never occurred to me until recently that atheists were the minority. I spend so much time reading scientific journals, articles and in general associating myself with ‘atheist-type’ people that I didn’t even realize what sort of bias our country had.

As crazy as that number was to me, another figure had me literally reeling. 63% of Americans believe that the bible is literally true. Yes, thats right: virgin birth, jesus resurrection, the earth is 6000 years old, literal freaking truth. I had assumed most people used religion in a sort of “Well, I believe in God but I haven’t been to church in years.” To actually believe all of this literally was absurd to me. If I told someone I saw a bush on fire but not consumed they would laugh at me. I’d laugh at me!

There really are so many things I’d like to get into in this first post but that’s not what it was intended for. I am going off on a huge angry rant when really all I wanted to do was say “Hello there, this is my site.” Please comment or tell your friends about this site. I know it’s not much, I mean, I am a web developer and I’m using a default wordpress theme so I know it needs some work. That’s it for now, if you have any interesting articles on religion please send them my way. Thanks and enjoy.
